Sound system selector-turned-singjay Mawga Don is currently enjoying much attention with his single ‘Respect’. The soulful lovers’ rock track, which was produced by the St Elizabeth-based label JKeez Records, was released in June.
“My phone has been ringing like crazy since this song came out. It’s getting a lot of support from DJs in South America, the US, Africa, and the Caribbean. I’m also getting a lot of dubplate requests,” the artiste said.
Mawga Don established himself as a selector long before he launched his recording career.
“I was the kid who would always be beating a desk and singing in school. I started out as a selector on my cousin’s sound while I was in high school. After that, I went on to Magnum Force Sound and then King Legend. Working with these popular sounds helped me to make a name for myself as a top selector. Eventually, I created my own sound, which is called Don Squad,” said Mawga Don.
The hard-working entertainer got his first taste of success as a recording artiste when he released a viral track in 2016 titled Tune Up.
“I’ve been voicing dubplates for myself over the years, and a lot of people always encouraged me to become a recording artiste, but I never gave it much thought until after the release of Tune Up. The feedback I received when Tune Up was release showed me that I have the potential to succeed as a recording artiste,” he said.
Mawga Don is currently working on several projects for JKeez Records, including an EP that is slated to be released in 2019.
